We thank everyone for contributing hard-earned resources to the congregation. Here are five ways to financially support the work of First Unitarian at all giving levels. This is what we call STEWARDSHIP

  1. Pledge Annually
  2. Use Grocery Cards
  3. Support the Auction
  4. Donate a Car
  5. Memorial gifts & planned giving

Pledge Annually

The vast majority of our annual budget comes from paid pledges: people committing to an amount they will contribute over a 12-month period. This is critical to guiding the choices for what we can accomplish as a congregation each year. Without pledges we wouldn’t have our fantastic staff and we couldn’t maintain our historic facility. We greatly appreciate the financial commitments made through pledges.

The congregation has been divided into monthly groups which are contacted once a year with the option to extend their current pledge or make a new one. Ambassadors follow up with each group to answer questions and encourage everyone to participate. You choose the method (check, electronic funds transfer, stock, etc.) and frequency (weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually).

Consider giving based on a percentage of income. Many members strive for 5% of their household income. Remember that FUSD pays a total of $84 per member to the Mountain Desert District ($26) and the Unitarian Universalist Association ($58). We recognize that everyone cannot give equally.  Your giving is an expression of your life circumstances, hopes, dreams, and ideals. Consider your values, commitment, your income and your needs. Then….please give as generously as you can!

We also have information on how to make a pledge from investment income.

Use Grocery Cards

This method is one of the easiest ways to support our organization. If you shop at a participating grocer, every purchase you make raises funds for our congregation. For every $100 you spend on groceries or gas, for instance, FUSD receives up to $5 directly from the store. And it doesn’t cost you anymore for your purchases. It is a win-win. This adds up quickly. In fact, we receive approximately $10,000 per year toward our budget.  If everyone used the cards regularly, we could double the amount we received last year.

How does this work?

It is simple. Our shopping cards operate like any gift card. Pre-loaded cards are available to buy each Sunday during coffee hour. You then use them like a debit card at the selected grocery stores. The following grocers allow you to re-load your card at any of their stores, any time. This makes it easy to use it for all your regular purchases. Just ask the customer service desk in the store to re-load the card with cash or using your own debit card.

  • King Soopers (5% contribution to FUSD)
  • Safeway (5% contribution to FUSD)

The following stores provide single-use cards. You can always purchase new cards each Sunday at FUSD.

  • Sprouts (3% contribution to FUSD)
  • Whole Foods (3% contribution to FUSD)
  • Natural Grocers (3% contribution to FUSD)

Support the Annual Auction

In May, we host our highest-earning annual fundraiser. It is a Great food, drink and music are combined with silent auctions, raffles and a rousing live auction. Nearly half of the money raised often comes through the Fixed Price Dinners and Events. Members sponsor one-of-a-kind gathering at their homes or unique venues. Clearly, our congregation loves to eat well and go to fine concerts, parties, and other events! Volunteers make this event possible. They contribute items for auction, secure donations from local businesses, host events, and help organize the affair.
