Commissioned by a member of First Unitarian in 2011 this painting currently hangs in our Religious Exploration space at First Unitarian.  It is vibrantly colored, meaasures 53" square, and inspires hours of contemplation looking at all the symbols and images.  The text below, witten by the artist Lokken Liane, is on a plaque next to the painting.

This is a painting about the ways that so many things and people fit together.  I hope that you can find more connections than I even thought of when I painted this.

I started in the center of the painting, which is the heart.  It seems a little stretched, and not like the perfect store-bought heart.  That's kind of how our hearts are in real life.  If they are soft, they will get stretched, pulled, and sometimes bruised, but the heart is the center of it all, and the heart is where everything comes from in my painting.

Some Questions:

  • Can you find the web?
  • What is different about this web?
  • Which religions are symbolized here?
  • How do the colors make you feel?
  • What do the images around the outer edges have in common and why do you think they are there?
  • How are the patterns in the painting like the patterns in our lives?
  • What else in this painting makes you think about your palace in the world?

I hope that my painting will inspire you to think about the web of life and how it all fits together.  Maybe you will want to make some art of your own.

Lokken Liane
